OpenAI and Time strike content licensing deal

The tie-up is aimed at giving OpenAI access to Time’s news archives from the past 101 years ‘to enhance its products’—or train its large language models.

American news magazine Time announced on Thursday that it is partnering with OpenAI, joining a growing list of news publishers striking similar content licencing deals with the AI major.

Time’s agreement gives OpenAI’s products, including ChatGPT, access to news archives from the past 101 years “to enhance its products”—basically train its large language models. OpenAI’s products will also use this content in responses to user prompts, along with proper citation and a link back to the original content. Financial details of the deal were not disclosed.
