How a browser development competition embarrassed India’s IT ministry

A blatant rip-off of a popular browser ended up winning Rs 75 lakh in a competition for indigenously developed web browsers.

Last month, India’s information technology minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced the winners of the Indian Web Browser Development Challenge, or IWBDC. He expressed “immense pride on the participants who demonstrated outstanding innovations, remarkable creativity, expertise and in making significant strides in the development of a reliable web browser tailored to Indian needs”. 

However, it appears that some of the winners did not display any of those qualities.

Zoho Corporation emerged as the winner with its Ulaa browser. Team Ping’s eponymous browser was the runner-up and Ajna’s Bharat Web Navigator finished third. The three were awarded Rs 1 crore, Rs 75 lakh …
