Why Uber’s push for white-plate cabs could hurt taxi drivers

The ride-hailing giant began allowing private vehicles to operate as taxis in Assam and sees this as a template it wants to expand to the whole country.

Last week, Uber began “Uber Saarthi,” a private car ride-sharing service, in the state of Assam. The new offering allows drivers to onboard their private cars (with white licence plates) on Uber and begin accepting trips and earning. The service is currently open to women and military veterans. 

This is already the case in most parts of the world. In the United States and the United Kingdom, private car owners operate their vehicles as taxis on Uber and other ride-hailing services.
