Far from easing, India’s coal addiction worsens

The likes of the Adani and JSW groups, who have been building their green credentials, have renewed their appetite for coal-fired plants as the country is nowhere near retreating from the dirtiest fuel.

Coal is back on the menu as India’s hunger for electricity keeps growing.

Consider this. The country added 5.7 gigawatts of coal capacity in the 2023-24 fiscal, up 4.5x from the previous year, government data shows. Also, the share of coal in India’s energy mix grew to 75% from 73%, while that of non-fossil fuel sources fell to 24% from 26% earlier. And over the next 18 months, the country expects to add 19.4 GW of coal power capacity.
