India joins the offshore mining race

The country is heavily reliant on other nations for the supply of critical minerals. With ambitious clean energy targets, it urgently needs to find more sources.

Earlier this month, the Centre introduced new rules for mining of offshore minerals. It has also said that it will soon launch the first tranche of auction of offshore mineral blocks.  

Now, the government has been touting its efforts towards offshore mining as quick initiatives to step up the country’s clean energy transition. In 2021, the Centre approved the Deep Ocean Mission for a total budget of Rs 4,077 crore for the exploration of deep-sea minerals.
