Latest version of draft broadcast bill, much criticized, likely to be withdrawn

“Select stakeholders” with whom the bill was shared last month for feedback have now been asked to return the document without any inputs.

The latest version of the draft Broadcasting Services (Regulation) Bill 2024, meant to replace the Cable Television Networks (Regulation) Act, 1995, will likely be withdrawn, The Economic Times reported on Monday, citing sources aware of the matter. 

Last month, the government shared a revised version of the bill—first released in November last year—with “select stakeholders” for their inputs. The Hindustan Times had reported that there were strict efforts to prevent it from being shared with others, causing much alarm over the manner in which it was done and the deemed changes.
