Capital, Impact and the Farm-to-Fork Opportunity in India
Join us as we explore the unconventional world of agri-food and consumer investing with Jinesh Shah, Partner at Omnivore Capital. We will unpack how the fund marries capital with impact, what makes a business worth backing, and where the next scalable opportunities could emerge across agriculture, food, consumer and deep science.
For many years Indian venture capital has had a standard approach to investing. Digital Payments, aggregators of services, SAAS or consumer, these four buckets have formed the bulk of the investing hypothesis. It is in this landscape that Omnivore stands out. They are a fairly interesting fund where their hypothesis is to marry capital and impact, with a focus on food products and consumer.
Founded in 2011 by Mark Kahn and Jinesh Shah, the fund has been investing in startups building in agriculture and food systems. This spans from lending, storage, companies that are building marketplaces among others. The fund has put its money where its mouth is. Its portfolio has includes investments like DeHaat, Stellapps, Ecozen, Aquaconnect and Pixxel, a very non-traditional portfolio. There are a lot of questions with such an approach. How does one look at returns? What counts as impact? How does filtering work for entrepreneurs building in this space? We hope to delve into all of this. The session will look at where the opportunities lie in agri-foods and consumer businesses. We will also discuss Omnivore’s consumer and deep science theses, where the fund is doing more of its investing. The firm’s stated areas include farmer platforms, agri fintech, precision agriculture, food-to-consumer brands and agrifood life sciences. Private subscribers should expect a candid conversation on how the fund decides what deserves capital, and where it sees the next scalable, long-term companies emerging.
