India’s second largest domestic hybrid seed company will be closely watching proceedings in an ongoing landmark Supreme Court case. At stake is the Indian government’s plan to introduce the first ever genetically modified food crop. 

The apex court is hearing three separate pleas challenging the government’s approval for commercial cultivation of GM mustard. The petitions—filed by activist Aruna Rodrigues, NGO Gene Campaign and the Research Foundation for Science and Technology—contend that introducing genetically modified food crops could pose unknown risks to human, animal and soil health.
