Indian football’s own goal

Recent events show how one man’s manipulations can pressure even the apex court into reversing decisions taken for the good of sport.

The ongoing saga between the international governing body for football, FIFA, and the All India Football Federation (its Indian counterpart) has had more twists and turns than a Quentin Tarantino movie. Things are changing so fast that it is hard to keep track. Still, here goes:

  • A Supreme Court bench comprising Justice D.Y. Chandrachud and Justice A.S. Bopanna reversed itself and disbanded the Committee of Administrators, or CoA, it had earlier appointed to create a new constitution for the All India Football Federation and to hold free, fair and transparent elections to the AIFF executive council.
