Editor's note: In 2020, Mohit Kapoor, the former head of technology capability at DBS Bank, was brought in by the Mahindra Group as the executive vice president and group chief technology officer for “driving the group’s ambitious technology transformation agenda”. The idea was to have him work with the group’s diverse businesses and leverage new and emerging technologies to create new business models and transform customer experiences across the group’s diverse set of companies. I spoke to Kapoor last month to understand that journey of two years. Before we got started, he helped me understand the group’s large array of business interests. There are four core, large businesses—automotive, agriculture, finance and IT (Tech Mahindra)—and then there are a few growth businesses, including used cars, solar energy, logistics, holidays, rural housing and real estate. The third segment consists of new businesses built in the last two years with digital-only business models. These include digital lending (Digital Finco, small-ticket paperless loans) and digital agriculture (Krish-e, digital services for farmers).
